Correlation of Trinidadians’ Gross National Happiness and Collective Self-Esteem: Implications for the Psychological Capital

Abstract

This mixed methodology study will investigate the correlation between Trinidadians’ Gross National Happiness and Collective Self-Esteem and its implications for the psychological capital. Thirty-six participants answered the Collective Self-Esteem Survey ((Luhtanen & Crocker, 1992), Gross National Happiness Questionnaire asking 36 participants to respond to questions about their lifestyles, philosophies, and what makes them happy. Fifty-one participants completed a Gross Domestic Questionnaire responding to questions on a Likert-scale from 1 to 5 around such subscales as job satisfaction, their reactions to positive and negative events, self-reported happiness, and general happiness. Pearson’s Coefficient correlation will be implemented to determine whether there is a significant correlation between Trinidadians’ Gross National Happiness and their Collective Self-Esteem. After this is determined, implications for the psychological capital such as optimism, hope, self-efficacy, and resilience will be made and recommendations for improvement of the psychological capital in Trinidad and within the region.
