Post-Federation Montserrat: Perspectives from a British Overseas Territory

Abstract

Societies value cultural heritage; Montserrat is no exception. This paper examines how culture impacts on national development in the post-Federation period – from 1962 to present. It takes a brief look at culture in pre-Federation times in order to put the discussion in proper perspective. In acknowledging the importance of cultural preservation for future generations, the paper explains how this was done, hence the need to look at some years before 1958, the year that the West Indies Federation was established. It takes the position that Montserrat’s culture is not ‘pure’, but is a combination of influences from other cultures. This combination has brought about a unique Montserrat way of life. It also relates how the many different aspects of this ‘unique’ culture have contributed to national development. It further asserts that ‘social commentary’ has played a significant role in the strengthening of community cohesion, while at the same time helping to push the nation’s agenda forward. The paper concludes that the present generation should ensure that the unique culture that has evolved from various influences should be passed on to successive generations. A review of literature and documentary analysis are used to support the discussion.
