Article Title

Enhancement of Air Cargo as a Revenue Stream in Grand Cayman; Feasibility and Implications

Abstract

Globally, the air transportation industry has achieved sustained growth despite numerous external shocks, such as the global financial crises of 2008, or the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Continued increased globalisation has led to greater demands on the air freight transportation sector. This paper outlines a proposal to conduct research in the air cargo operations at Grand Cayman. The purpose of this research is to gain understanding of the regional and global air cargo markets, and to determine if opportunities could exist to develop current air cargo operations and enhance current revenue streams. The areas for proposed research include air cargo market growth; security regulations and how they impact air cargo, examination of the connections or connectivity at Grand Cayman and how development could impact air cargo traffic, regional traffic flow and its implications, fuel costs, and political factors which could potentially influence the development of air cargo traffic. In particular, this research will examine whether an opportunity may exist for Grand Cayman to strategically position itself as an air cargo hub and transhipment point to serve the Americas and the Caribbean. This research will examine whether historical air cargo traffic handled at Grand Cayman has grown proportionately with global air cargo trends, and if opportunities could exist to develop the necessary infrastructure and capabilities to achieve future sustained growth in line with forecasted global models. This research will also examine the potential benefits and challenges that this developmental growth could bring to the Cayman Islands and the wider Caribbean region.
