Nicola Williams is the second Complaints Commissioner of the Cayman Islands, and the first woman to be appointed to that role, which she took up in August 2009. She has extensive experience in this field, having previously held two senior Ombudsman roles in the UK. Prior to this, she was a barrister in private practice for several years, specializing in criminal law, and appearing at courts at all levels up to and including the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords sitting as the Privy Council. She was part of a delegation sponsored by the British Council, lecturing Turkish police inspectors on Human Rights, and was a Legal expert on BBC World for the OJ Simpson trial verdict in 1995.
In October 2009 she was appointed to the judiciary of England and Wales, where she sits on a part-time basis. In November 2010, Ms Williams was appointed Vice-President of the Caribbean Ombudsman Association. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and a past winner of Cosmopolitan magazine Woman of Achievement Award (Professions). She has presented papers at a number of conferences internationally on criminal justice, transparency, confidentiality and dealing with police complaints in an age of international terrorism.
